Beautiful Lives Project (Vol 1.)

Stories of you.

(being) created and illustrated by 易Linda

Target Audience: For anyone who's asked themselves: what am I going to do with my wild and precious life? For those who dare (and are learning) to live authentic, happy, daring and loving lives. (shhhh.... it's for me!)

Status: This project started in 2013 and has alternatingly: changed, stumbled, developed and been brought back to the drawing board multiple time. Currently in production mode (in my sketchbook and computer). Sneak peeks shared on facebook and tumblr. The ultimate goal = Book (or magazine?). tbd.

The Inspiration:

A number of things. Like most stories, this one started with a question.

What am I going to do with my life??!

In highschool my answer was: Accrue extracurriculars. (Do my hair) Crush the SAT's. (make the Cheerleading squad) Volunteer. (Go to homecoming)

Get into a good college.  (Conquer the world...)

Check, check, check and check... and wait a minute

But is that what life amounted to? A series of checklists and accomplishments? I felt vaguely disappointed with it all, all the while berating myself for my #firstworldproblem sense of unhappiness.  With college applications on the horizon and essays and interview panels asking me: what's your passion? What makes you tick?

... I found myself scrambling for answers and frantically waving around my résume in hopes that the shiny things on it would distract from the fact that:

I had NO CLUE.

The Story

... and looking back from the middle of it all - that's what this project is about:

Getting a clue.

Or rather, gathering clues and gathering "data" around the following three questions:

1. Who are you?

Who are the people out there changing the world, doing what they love, making a difference, carving their own path?  Why not learn from my peers?

2. How are you doing it?

If I could peek into their tool-kits (or treasure chests), what would it contain? What habits do they cultivate, what inspires them, what advice do they rely on? Can I incorporate these into my own life?

3. What's the real story?

HAHAHA... but actually. Word. Success is sexy... or at least it seems that way.  We hear success stories a lot.  But what about the unglamorous side? The fear. The not knowing. Failure is real and fear human. In experiencing success stories, this is something that we can't afford (yet often do) leave out.

In Progress...

So what am I up to now with this project?

I've decided to bring it back to basics: what can I do/enjoy doing... that's also a unique way of presenting the information I gathered? I've decided to illustrate and weave the stories of the people I've interviewed into a graphic novel/magazine hybrid:

Sneak peek: a panel from an interview I'm working on.  The guy is currently in the midst of a career change and getting his Masters in Education from Harvard.  He's a startup founder and dreams of providing equal access to quality test-preparation to Chinese students who can't afford the high sticker price of private tutors.

The transcript excerpt:

"I've always had a fear of death..
Or rather
This fear of NOT BEING
I just have been what
5 or 6?
When it just struck me:
This is it. One life to live.
And if we're lucky?
100 years to live it.
Well.
If this IS it...
Then by God I'm going to do justice
To the story of my life.
"
