Panda Cub Stories | 熊猫bao bao故事

created and produced by 易Linda

Direct Audience: The pre-K students I worked with at Panda Cub Academy... who rekindled my desire to create stories inspire and educate! General audience: Children and families looking for a bilingual (Mandarin and English) story-time experience:)

Status: Currently working on a "Journey to the West" retelling! This has blossomed into a podcast project. I am also still working on teaching myself animation, in order to bring the audio to life! To see the up-to-date progress, please visit www.pandacubstories.com. To see how this project got started, read on below!

It Started with Videos...

First video attempt

"WHY THERE IS NO CAT IN THE CHINESE ZODIAC" OR "12 生肖里为什么没有猫

This is my first video: be kind, still working out kinks!

Note: The first 2 minutes of the video = letter to my former students.  Skip directly to storytime here (2:16)!

First (and latest) animated video

Progress inching forward: a retelling of Wu Cheng'en's Journey to the West (西游记)...stop motion style!

The Inspiration:

Here's the deal: I started this bilingual (Chinese/English) storytime youtube account (maybe later a podcast?) for the students I used to teach at Panda Cub Academy, and the many students I've had the pleasure and honor of working with during my time at Hua Dan. This project is an attempt to answer the following question:

How could I continue to contribute to the growth of the children that I so loved so much, even if I couldn't stay with them physically?

I wished I could write them letters (I'm a BIG fan of letter writing... surprise!)... but many of them haven't begun to read yet.

One day, I was chatting with my friend Anthony, and behold!

An idea!

A crossroads: Do I stay at Panda Cub and work with the children who have brought such joy into my life... or do I take the Duke TIP opportunity and be part of an international program focused at developing resources to aid gifted and talented children - wherever they are? Can I do both?

A: Why not read some of your stories out loud?

易L:  Like an audio book?

A: Yea, or a podcast. With sound effects.

易L: Hmm.....  (ding ding ding!!!)

Thus was born the idea is to take traditional Chinese stories (e.g. 神话,成语故事,etc...) and create short videos/podcasts for a young audience just beginning to learn and practice Chinese.

This way, they not only have a language resource, but also a cultural resource!
